Nine Men's Morris – Play Online for Free
Nine Men's Morris is a two-player strategy board game in which each player controls nine pieces. The goal is to capture your opponent's pieces or block all their moves until they can no longer play. You can choose to face the computer or a real opponent; either way, the virtual board works just like a physical one.
The Board, Pieces, and How the Game Works
The board consists of three nested squares connected at the midpoints of their sides, creating 24 intersection points: 12 at the corners and 12 at the midpoints. Each player has nine pieces — one set white, the other black — and can place them on any free intersection.
Players take turns. When a player lines up three pieces in a row on a horizontal or vertical line, they form a "mill" and can remove one of the opponent's pieces from the board. A mill can be formed on the outer edges or along the connecting lines between the squares. Pieces that are part of a mill cannot normally be removed. The one exception: if all of the opponent's remaining pieces are in mills, any one of them may be taken.
Three Phases
- Placement: White places the first piece, then players alternate until all 18 pieces are on the board. If a player is not careful during this phase, the opponent can already start forming mills.
- Movement: Once all pieces are placed, players move one piece per turn to an adjacent free intersection. Moving is mandatory. The most effective moves lead to new mills and allow you to remove an opponent's piece.
- Jump: When a player is reduced to three pieces, they are no longer limited to adjacent moves and may place their piece on any free intersection. This freedom can turn a losing position around. When both players can jump, the game can stretch on and become highly strategic.
A player loses when reduced to two pieces, as they can no longer form any mills. You can also win during the movement phase by blocking all of the opponent's pieces so that no move is possible. If neither player can make progress and pieces move back and forth indefinitely, the game ends in a draw.
